Global Finals

Help us Spread CCC,Inc.

We are the “Magical Mummies” from Haw Creek Elementary School and we participate in Destination Imagination—an educational program that helps us learn valuable skills like creative and critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork through different STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Challenges.

We are a team of 3rd through 5th graders and this year, our team competed in the Service Learning Challenge. We are excited to be the top-scoring Destination Imagination team in our state and to have the opportunity to present our Challenge solution at Global Finals—an international academic competition where we will compete against teams in our Challenge from around the globe. During our state competition, we not only won first place in our challenge,  but also won a Torchbearer Award for our community service project Chances for Children (learn more at www.chancesforchildrencarolinas.com), as well as a DaVinci Award for a team created hermit crab costume that was made out of all recycled materials. We have been told we are the most decorated team in NC Destination Imagination history with 3 medals!  It was so exciting to be recognized for our hard work and we are thrilled to share it on global stage.

We are most excited to share our program, Chances for Children,  with other creative changemakers in our world. We have raised almost $2500 and lots of gear thus far to provide access to extracurricular activities to children who, due to financial constraints, would otherwise be unable to participate.  We plan to continue to grow this program and would love to see other children help us to expand our reach.

This year, Global Finals will take place in Kansas City, Missouri. Teams that earn the opportunity to attend Global Finals are responsible for their own fundraising to cover their costs. Because getting to the competition is expensive, our team would welcome the opportunity to partner with your business in support of our Global Finals fundraising efforts.  All monies that we raise above our goal will go to Chances for Children Carolinas, Inc.

We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to partner with you and look forward to speaking with you more about our journey this year.

Best-

Mary-Hudson Harrelson (5th grade), Hadley Davis (5th grade), Lily Aho (5th grade), Charlie Day (4th grade), Skyler Lewis (3rd grade), Dashiell Griffin (3rd grade) and Laura Cooper Harrelson (3rd grade)

What is Destination Imagination?

This slide show tells more about the program, our challenge and why we want to present it on a global stage!

Going to Global Finals!!

Chances for Children Carolinas, Inc was formed as a solution to a Destination Imagination Challenge. Our team, the “Magical Mummies”, competed this month in our state DI tournament and won! We won first place in our challenge and won a Torchbearer Award for Chances for Children!! We now get the opportunity to compete in Global Finals in Kansas City, MO in May! We are so excited to not only compete on the world stage but to share our program. We would love to see it grow and scale to other regions!

Archive: The Great Escape Race – January 11, 2019

One of the DI teams at  Haw Creek Elementary School this year has chosen the Service Learning Challenge.  Their task was to identify a need and create a solution to meet that need.  The children brainstormed and wanted to choose a need that they could identify with.   They created and implemented a school-wide parent survey and discovered that many children at the school do not participate in any extra-curricular activities due to financial constraints.  They have created a program called “Chances for Children” which will be a scholarship fund to allow children to participate in activities of their choice.

They are going to host an event “the Great Escape Race” on January 11, 2019, at Haw Creek Elementary School in the gym from 6-8pm.  It will be a hybrid adventure/obstacle race/escape room for all ages. Teams of 2-5 will take on a series of challenges to get clues to help them ESCAPE!

There will also be a new “Lending Locker” for local community members to donate used equipment, uniforms, gear- ANYTHING extra that a child would need to participate in an extra-curricular activity.  We will collect and inventory and make these free to anyone in need! These items will be collected at the race.

We need MANY volunteers to help the event run smoothly!!  Please sign up! If you have any questions or need any information- or want to help with the cause but cannot attend the race- please contact us at chancesforchildrencarolinas@gmail.com .
